Along West 4th Avenue (Kitsilano) you can find Au Comptoir – a Parisian-style café. Upon entering the cafe your eyes are drawn to the beautiful rustic bar. A male waiter in a crisp blue dress shirt and black apron promptly greets you in French.
The former PiDGin sous chef, Chef Daniel McGee joined Au Comptoir in 2014. He brings French style cuisine but adds his own unique flare. Chef Daniel sources the best local ingredients whenever possible.
The night started with one of my favourite appetizers; Assiette De Charcuterie served with terrine de campagne, corned veal tongue, saucisson sec, and smoked duck breast ham.
Next to follow was Saumon À L’ Unilatérial pan roasted wild salmon served with house made fennel tagliatelle, gem lettuce, and beurre blanc.
The third dish; Margret De Canard duck breast seasoned with four spiced served with endive tarte tatin, turnip, and plum. The lightly seared duck was nicely seasoned and full of flavour. Paired with the duck was a beautiful endive tarte tatin, so tender and so good! This was my favourite dish of the night.
We had two desserts to end our evening. Dark Chocolate Mousse; this was rich, decadant, and would satisfy any chocolate lovers sweet tooth. Apricot and Pistachio Tart; this was a perfect dessert for my tastebuds, as it was not overly sweet.
Accompanying my desserts was a simple but delicious latte served with a crisp cookie.
All the dishes were well prepared and with balanced tastes. Au Comptoir is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is a nice place to go for a casual dining experience with friends or with a date.
