17°C Dessert Café
17°C Dessert Cafe is the newest addition to the ever-growing dessert scene in Metro Vancouver. Located in East Vancouver, 17°C Dessert Cafe offers many Asian-style treats that are unique in presentation and fun to eat.
Last week, I was lucky enough to be invited by ChineseBites for a dessert tasting with a few other foodies/bloggers.
First off was the Light Bulb drinks series-Kiwi soda with chunks of fresh kiwi; Passion Fruit; Pomegranate; and Lemon. These drinks are available as carbonated or non-carbonated. The drinks were presented in a light bulb shaped glass and were not overly sweet. Basically, it was just juice in a neat looking container.
The mini watermelons were hollowed out to make the melon balls. It was then filled with slightly sweetened fluffy shaved ice and topped up with the melon balls and sliced almonds. This dessert also came with a side of condensed milk so you could sweeten it to your liking.
The Watermelon Shaved Ice is their best seller and I could see why – the naturally sweetened and crisp watermelon worked very well with the creamy shaved ice.
The Honeydew Melon Shaved Ice is the same concept as the Watermelon Shaved Ice dessert but with juicy pearls (similar to bubble tea pearls but filled with juice) and a Melona. I didn’t care for the juicy pearls as I would have preferred fresh berries to the pearls. Other options for this dessert include pineapple and cantaloupe.
The melon shaved ice is a labour intensive dessert so when the cafe gets busy, expect to wait a long time (upwards of 30 minutes) for your dessert. The melon shaved ice is quite large so it can easily be shared between 2-3 people.
For those who have a sweet tooth, the Oreo Shaved Ice dessert is the way to go.
A simple and not overly sweet tapioca dessert topped with fresh mango.
I would have like to see this filled with more yogurt.
The drinks and desserts are fun concepts at 17°C Dessert Café. Would I come back? I wouldn’t go out of my way for it but if I was in the area, I would come back.
I would recommend:
Watermelon shaved ice.
