The Greasy Spoon Diner Supper Series is a once a month, dinner pop up at Save On Meats. The series is organized by Mark Brand for A Better Life Foundation. Each month, one of the best chefs from Vancouver is featured who prepares an amazing four to five course meal with paired drinks. All proceeds from the evening go towards A Better Life Foundation.
The May 17th, 2016 Supper Series featured Chef Pekka Tavela from Wildebeest.
First course was the Pot Pie, made with lamb sweetbreads, onions, mushrooms and citrus cream. I was expecting a traditional style pot pie like my mom used to make, so when this arrived to the table, I was a little thrown off. The Pot Pie was absolutely delicious ! The puff pastry remained light and airy and the sweet breads were tender and well flavoured.
HASH & EGG was next; confit rabbit, smoked potato, soft poached farm egg and parmesan foam. Another well executed dish. The saltiness of the parmesan foam worked very well with the poached egg and confit rabbit.
RUBEN & CHIPS – veal tongue, St. Paulin cheese panna cotta, pickles & sauerkraut, rye crisp, onion chips and smoked veal tongue katsuobushi. This dish was beautifully presented by Chef Tekka.
CHICKEN & WAFFLES; with seared game hen breast, roulade leg, brown butter waffle, maple bourbon gel, berry & rhubarb compote. This was my favourite dish of the night. The hen breast was so tender and the tart berry and rhubarb compote worked very well with the sweet maple bourbon gel.
And lastly dessert; a simple but delectable Espresso Cream Puff.
I had a fabulous time at The Greasy Spoon Diner Supper Series, especially knowing that all proceeds go to help people who are truly in need. Event tickets are $95 per person and can be purchased on The Greasy Spoon website.
The next dinner series is June 27th, 2016 featuring the Chef Derek Gray from Osteria Savio Volpe.
